LAB BURNERS

The medieval version of the modern Bunsen burner was a versatile piece of equipment that could burn a variety of fuels including alcohol, kerosene, and whale oil. The wick adjusts to balance the intensity of the flame with the amount of smoke produced. The deep fuel reservoir is capped by a removable cup that could also be filled with fuel to produce a very hot blazing fire.

ASH BURNERS

Used in the making of alchemical elixirs, this ceramic ash burner has a deep lid with a hole in the center for venting smoke. A replica of a Swiss apparatus, the alcohol-drenched dregs (stems, leaves, etc.) left over from the tincturing process are placed in this heavy pot and set afire to be reduced to ashes. The ashes were then collected and tinctured again, resulting in the Elixir, which literally means "from the ashes."
